ICE CASE STUDIES
MODEC Ivory Coast
FPSO MV10 Baobab, Offshore Ivory Coast
The FPSO Kwame Nkrumah MV21 is situated in approximately 1,100 metres water depth on the Jubilee Field, which is one of the largest oil fields discovered offshore West Africa in the past 10 years. It is operated by MODEC on behalf of Tullow Oil.
The FPSO is capable of processing more than 120,000 barrels of oil per day, and injecting more than 230,000 barrels of water per day and 160 MMscfd of produced gas. The FPSO is designed to remain on the field for up to 20 years.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
ICE were awarded the contract in 2019 as part of the FPSO Baobab MV10 Life Extension Programme to improve living conditions and increase the number of people on board. MODEC planned to upgrade the full A-Deck area. The twenty two existing cabins and associated corridors were in poor condition, as might be expected after almost 15 years of use.
Each cabin needed to be modernised with new flame retardant furniture, B15 walls, ceilings and doors, electrics, plumbing and flooring. Each cabin refit also included a new marine specification flat pack Wet Unit. All new materials were specified to current IMO and fire rated marine standards.

FINISHED CABINS AND WET ROOMS
THE SOLUTION
B15 RATED WALLS, CEILINGS AND DOORS
To achieve the required material fire ratings and floor space for increasing the number of personnel that could be accommodated within the new A-deck cabin and corridor layout, all the existing cabin dividing and entrance wall panels including doors needed to be removed and replaced. This also extended to all existing ceilings and ceiling lighting throughout the full A-deck area.
FURNITURE
The client chose cabin furniture manufactured by Geshwender, which met their specifications by using fire rated HPL- Compact materials. Our design included double bunks with TV, single bunks with TV and storage above, in addition to desks and storage lockers.
WET UNITS
We also designed and fitted marine spec Wet Units which included, toilets, hand wash basins, shower units and all the associated plumbing pipework, electrics and ventilation. These were constructed and installed into each of the 22 cabins.
CORRIDORS
The associated corridors received new B15 rated ceilings and lighting, with the existing walls being overclad with a decorative fastclad finish. Void access B15 doors were installed between cabins.
FLOORING
All the existing steel decks were re-screeded and a new heavy duty marine grade vinyl floor covering was installed.
THE TEAM
The project was designed, procured, and delivered by our in-house project team. Our offshore project team included four joiners, two electricians, a plumber and a project supervisor. The team worked back to back over a five month period with the support of offshore personnel.
THE OUTCOME
The project was delivered on schedule and with no health and safety incidents. The new cabins offer comfortable, relaxing sleeping and living areas, which are easily maintained and feel spacious.
